There are several free text animation presets available to apply into text layer in After Effects. We can follow below steps to make text appearing one letter at a time.
1. After creating a composition in After Effects, we can add text by using Horizontal Type Tool
2. Select Text Layer, and go to Effects and Presets Window, and search Character
3. In Text > Animate In, we have several options of text animation presets for making text appearing letter by letter.
4. Double Clicks the presets, for example Fade Up Characters
5. Text animation preset is then added into text layer, we can press Space to preview
